Wireline networks were optimized for hard-wired, two-way conversations and have an established level of voice quality. Carriers that offer conferencing services have to manage the balance of expected voice quality with voice impairments that degrade conference call bridges.

Hybrid echo is particularly problematic on conference calls. When a line on the conference originates an echo, all callers hear the problem on every word. Hybrid echo makes communication difficult and is counterproductive to everyone on the call.
As more and more callers join the conference from their mobile phones, additional impairments are introduced to the bridge that degrade the call experience for all participants.
